Manipur has completed the first phase of deporting illegal immigrants from Myanmar, with 38 individuals exiting Bharat via Moreh on May 2. The deportation process was conducted without discrimination, affirming the State’s commitment to border security.
During the handover ceremony, one Indian national was also repatriated from Myanmar. State authorities continue to identify illegal immigrants, recording their biometric data as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard national borders and sovereignty.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued a stark warning on April 29, highlighting the proliferation of 996 new villages linked to illegal immigration. In a social media post, the CM highlighted the severe threat posed by this phenomenon to indigenous communities and national security.
His message addresses a longstanding issue in Manipur, where the unchecked influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar since 2006 has led to the establishment of numerous new settlements. This influx has not only altered demographics but also contributed to environmental degradation, including deforestation for settlements and illicit activities like poppy cultivation.
The encroachment on resources, job opportunities, land, and indigenous rights by these immigrants has further strained regional tensions, highlighting the need for decisive action to address this complex issue.
