Prime Minister Modi Visits Kolkata Ahead of Key Election Rallies in West Bengal

During a rally in Malda on April 26, PM Modi accused the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government of aiding Bangladeshi infiltrators in settling in the state, which he claimed resulted in the appropriation of Indian land and property.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kolkata on Thursday evening for a pivotal two-day visit ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. His itinerary includes addressing three significant rallies in West Bengal on Friday.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi proceeded directly to the Raj Bhavan around 10:20 pm, where he was cordially received by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose. He spent the night at the Governor’s residence.

Scheduled for Friday are three public meetings in Krishnanagar, Purba Bardhaman, and Bolpur Lok Sabha constituencies, where PM Modi is expected to address critical issues and rally support for his party.

In anticipation of the Prime Minister’s visit, Kolkata’s traffic police have imposed restrictions on vehicle movement and parking in various parts of the city. Goods vehicles will have limited access, while other vehicles may face diversions and restrictions aligned with PM Modi’s rally schedule.

The visit also prompted Governor CV Ananda Bose to truncate his personal trip to Kerala and return to Kolkata.

Over the past fortnight, PM Modi has conducted several election rallies across West Bengal, targeting key constituencies such as Malda, Arambagh, Krishnanagar, and Barasat. The state is witnessing a fierce electoral battle between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress, with both parties intensifying their campaigns.

During a rally in Malda on April 26, PM Modi accused the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government of aiding Bangladeshi infiltrators in settling in the state, which he claimed resulted in the appropriation of Indian land and property. In response, Banerjee asserted that the TMC was facing opposition not only from the BJP but also from the Left and Congress, labeling them as allies of the ruling party at the Centre.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC secured 22 seats, while the BJP made significant gains with 18 seats. The Congress party managed to win two seats – Berhampur and Malda Dakshin. The upcoming elections are poised to be a fierce contest as both major parties vie for dominance in West Bengal.
