Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a grand roadshow in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on May 13. Varanasi is Modi’s parliamentary constituency. Following the roadshow, he will file his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha constituency on May 14, according to sources.
Varanasi is slated to go to the polls in the seventh phase on June 1. The nomination filing process for this phase will commence on May 7 and conclude on May 14.
Senior Congress leader and the party’s Uttar Pradesh chief, Ajai Rai, is gearing up to contest against PM Modi from the Varanasi constituency. This marks Rai’s third attempt at securing the Varanasi seat, having previously contested against Modi in the 2014 and 2019 general elections, facing defeat on both occasions.
Additionally, stand-up comedian Shyam Rangeela has thrown his hat into the ring for the electoral battle in Varanasi. Hailing from Rajasthan, Rangeela gained prominence for his remarkable impersonations of PM Modi.
He announced his candidacy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi via social media on May 1.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Modi secured a resounding victory in Varanasi, garnering a staggering 4,79,505-vote lead. He amassed a total of 6,74,664 votes, while his closest competitor, Samajwadi Party candidate Shalini Yadav, managed to secure 1,95,159 votes.
Reflecting on the 2014 Lok Sabha election, PM Modi clinched victory in Varanasi with a substantial margin of 3.37 lakh votes. His main opponent at the time was Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, who garnered 2 lakh votes.
Modi’s upcoming roadshow and nomination filing are anticipated to be significant events in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections in Varanasi. With formidable opponents vying for the seat, including a seasoned political figure and a popular comedian, the electoral landscape in Varanasi promises to be both competitive and compelling.
