In a rebuttal to recent remarks made by US President Joe Biden characterizing India as “xenophobic,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized India’s longstanding tradition of openness and diversity, rejecting assertions of economic instability.
Speaking to the Economic Times, Jaishankar challenged Biden’s portrayal of India’s economic woes, stating firmly, “Our economy is not faltering.” He underscored India’s inclusive ethos, highlighting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government as evidence of the country’s welcoming stance.
Biden’s comments, delivered during a fundraising event in Washington on April 2, linked India’s economic challenges to its perceived xenophobia, alongside China, Japan, and Russia. He advocated for America’s economic growth model, emphasizing the importance of immigrant integration.
Jaishankar refuted Biden’s characterization, emphasizing India’s historic receptiveness to diverse cultures and peoples. He defended the CAA as a means to provide refuge to those facing persecution, dismissing criticisms that it discriminates against Muslims.
Furthermore, Jaishankar addressed concerns regarding biased media coverage, particularly in light of ongoing anti-Israel protests on American university campuses. He criticized certain segments of Western media for ideological bias, suggesting they seek to shape global narratives, including unfavorable portrayals of India.
Responding to allegations of India’s involvement in targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan, Jaishankar asserted that such incidents occur where terrorist activity is concentrated, dismissing them as part of a fabricated narrative propagated by terrorist organizations.
Following Biden’s remarks, the White House clarified the President’s intentions, emphasizing his respect for allies and partners. Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with India and Japan, emphasizing Biden’s track record of diplomatic engagement over the past three years.
