Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a firm statement on May 3, cautioning Badruddin Ajmal, leader of the All India United Democratic Front or AIUDF, about the feasibility of establishing government madrasas in the State. The CM’s remarks come in response to Ajmal’s earlier announcement of plans to introduce government madrasas in Assam.
Ajmal’s declaration, made on April 24, outlined intentions for AIUDF-elected representatives to construct 700 madrasas, countering the closure of around 750 madrasas in Assam. These closures ensued following the BJP-led Assam Government’s decision in 2023 to shut down all State-operated madrasas, transforming them into conventional schools.
Under CM Himanta Sarma’s leadership, the State administration has pursued the closure of approximately 1,000 private madrasas, engaging in dialogues with Muslim organisations to facilitate this transition. CM Himanta’s strategy reflects a broader governmental agenda aimed at reshaping the educational framework in Assam.
In response to Ajmal’s assertions, CM Himanta emphasised, “Even if Ajmal takes birth for the fourth time, government madrasas remain a distant dream.”
