The terror threat to the upcoming T20 World Cup has sparked concerns and heightened security measures in the Caribbean, where matches are set to take place.
Cricket West Indies (CWI), the governing body for cricket in the region, confirmed receiving a threat from North Pakistan, allegedly from the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) branch, commonly known as ISIS.
The threat, reportedly received through IS-affiliated media channels, aimed to incite violence against the sporting event. CWI stated that IS media sources have been promoting violence against various sporting events, urging supporters to join the battlefield in their nations.
Responding to the threat, CWI assured stakeholders that comprehensive security measures are in place. The International Cricket Council (ICC) echoed CWI’s statement, emphasizing the safety of all participants and fans.
Caribbean media outlets also confirmed the reports, with Trinidadian Prime Minister Keith Rowley affirming that security agencies are prepared to address any potential threats. Regional security officials in Barbados are actively monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the event.
Jonny Graves, CEO of CWI, highlighted the organization’s collaboration with authorities and continuous evaluation of global security landscapes to mitigate risks. He reiterated the priority placed on the safety and security of everyone involved in the T20 World Cup.
The development has prompted concerns regarding Pakistan’s hosting of future cricket tournaments, including the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Several countries, including Bharat, have expressed apprehensions about player safety in Pakistan, advocating for a change of venue. A decision on this matter may be reached during the ICC’s Annual General Meeting in July.
Despite the threat, preparations for the T20 World Cup continue, with matches scheduled to be held in various Caribbean nations and the United States. While security concerns persist, there have been no indications of threats to games scheduled in the United States.
