In a poignant response to recent remarks by Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar regarding the 26/11 terror attacks, Devika Rotawan, the youngest eyewitness in the trial of Ajmal Kasab, emphasized the importance of not reopening old wounds. Without directly naming Wadettiwar, Rotawan condemned his comments about the death of then Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare, cautioning against adding further pain to the memories of the tragic event.
Wadettiwar, currently serving as the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, ignited controversy by suggesting that Karkare was not killed by Kasab but by a bullet fired by a policeman associated with the RSS. His statement came during a political attack on Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor in the 26/11 trial and the BJP’s candidate for Mumbai North Central.
Reacting to Wadettiwar’s remarks, Rotawan expressed disbelief, questioning, “If Kasab did not fire on 26/11 then who did?” She urged politicians to refrain from politicizing such sensitive matters, stating, “You scratch our wounds and then sprinkle salt into it. If you want to do politics, do it on other topics and not on this.”
Rotawan, who alongside her father and brother endured the horrors of the attacks at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on November 26, 2008, reminded the public of the lasting trauma caused by the events of that day. Despite being shot in the leg and requiring crutches for an extended period, Rotawan bravely testified during Kasab’s trial, contributing to his eventual sentencing to death.
Addressing Wadettiwar directly, Rotawan questioned his loyalty to the nation, suggesting that those who wish to support Pakistan should relocate there. She defended Nikam’s integrity, highlighting his contributions to justice and national security.
Rotawan’s response serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of unity and healing in the face of tragedy, urging political leaders to prioritize the well-being of the nation over partisan interests.
