Recently, Taiwan reported that four Chinese coastguard ships briefly sailed through waters near the island’s outlying Kinmen Island, prompting Taipei to call on Beijing to cease actions that pose risks to navigation safety.
Taiwan’s coastguard revealed that the ships entered waters south of Kinmen, only five kilometers away from the Chinese city of Xiamen. They stayed in the area for about an hour before departing. Taiwan urged China to refrain from behavior endangering navigation safety.
Tension Mounts Ahead of Taiwan’s Presidential Inauguration
The incident comes amidst escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, with China claiming Taiwan as part of its territory and refusing to rule out the use of force to bring the island under its control.
With the inauguration of new Taiwan president Lai Ching-te scheduled for May 20, tensions have heightened further. Lai, like outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen, rejects China’s claim on Taiwan, which Beijing perceives as a threat to its territorial integrity.
Concerns Over Maritime Security
China’s incursion into waters near Kinmen has raised concerns over maritime security, especially following a series of deadly fishing accidents earlier this year.
In February, a Chinese speedboat capsized near Kinmen during a pursuit by Taiwan’s coastguard, resulting in two fatalities. Another incident occurred in March, leading to the death of two Chinese crew members. Taiwan defended its actions, stating that the boats were within prohibited waters, while China accused Taipei of concealing the truth about the incidents.
Taiwan’s Response and Preparedness
Responding to the heightened tensions, Taiwan announced plans to bolster support to its coastguard through enhanced surveillance and reconnaissance efforts. Despite concerns about potential disruptions to shipping supplies to offshore islands, Taiwan’s defense ministry assured the public of its preparedness and confidence in ensuring regional security.
Officials highlighted that there were no abnormalities in the Taiwan Strait at the moment and reassured that they were fully prepared to address any unexpected situations.
Anticipation of Further Provocations
With tensions running high, Taiwanese authorities remain vigilant for potential military exercises by Beijing following the May 20 inauguration. The increased presence of Chinese ships near Taiwan’s waters underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
Taiwan remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty while navigating the delicate balance of relations with China. As the situation unfolds, both sides continue to closely monitor each other’s actions amidst a backdrop of uncertainty and diplomatic friction.
