Ukrainian counterintelligence forces have managed to uncover and disrupt a sinister plot orchestrated by Russia to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with other high-ranking military and political figures.
As per Ukraine’s state security service, two colonels within the State Guard of Ukraine have been apprehended on suspicion of being involved in the scheme devised by Russia’s Federal Security Service.
The detained colonels, who were part of the unit responsible for safeguarding top officials, were allegedly recruited prior to Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The plot, meticulously planned by Russian intelligence, aimed to carry out the attack just before the inauguration of Russian President Vladimir Putin for his fifth term.
Head of the State Security Service, Vasyl Maliuk, revealed that the operation to thwart the assassination plan was conducted under utmost secrecy.
Maliuk personally supervised the intricate tracking of the plot, which involved identifying and apprehending individuals implicated in the conspiracy.
This latest revelation adds to the string of attempts on President Zelenskyy’s life since the commencement of the war with Russia. Zelenskyy had previously disclosed that there were at least 10 assassination attempts targeting him.
The relentless pursuit to eliminate the Ukrainian president underscores the escalating tensions between the two nations.
Furthermore, recent developments have also implicated a Polish individual who was arrested under suspicion of espionage on behalf of Russia’s military intelligence.
This arrest is linked to an alleged plot to spy on Zelenskyy, further emphasizing the multi-faceted nature of Russia’s covert operations aimed at destabilizing Ukraine.
As per Ukrainian authorities, the Russian agents involved in the plot had sought to infiltrate the president’s security detail, identifying members of the Ukrainian military who could potentially facilitate the assassination. The operation, orchestrated from Moscow, also entailed plans to target other senior Ukrainian officials through rocket attacks, drones, and missiles.
The apprehended Ukrainian colonels now face charges of treason, which carries a potential life sentence. The swift action taken by Ukrainian counterintelligence serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Russian aggression and underscores the resilience of Ukraine’s security apparatus in safeguarding its leadership and sovereignty amidst turbulent times.
