In a step to bolster the partnership between Bharat and the Maldives, Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer is set to embark on an official visit to Bharat from May 8th to May 10th.
This announcement comes amidst strained relations between the two nations, with Bharat agreeing to withdraw its military personnel from the Maldives before May 10th.
During his visit, Minister Zameer will engage in discussions with Bharat’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, aimed at deepening and expanding the existing cooperation between the two countries. Notably, this marks Minister Zameer’s first official visit to Bharat since assuming office, signifying the importance both countries place on fostering strong bilateral ties.
The decision to replace Bharatiya military personnel stationed in the Maldives was initiated following a formal request from the Maldivian government led by Mohamed Muizzu.
Bharat and the Maldives have been working closely to facilitate the smooth transition of personnel, with the first batch of Bharatiya technical personnel already deployed to replace defence personnel.
In a recent meeting between the two nations, held on May 3rd, the progress of this transition was reviewed, with both sides expressing satisfaction that the replacement of military personnel at the aviation platforms will be completed by the stipulated deadline.
In addition, discussions centered on various areas of mutual interest, including development and defence cooperation, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the bilateral relationship.
The strategic partnership between Bharat and the Maldives extends beyond military cooperation, encompassing humanitarian and medical assistance as well. Both countries have agreed on mutually workable solutions to ensure the continued operation of Bharatiya aviation platforms, which provide vital services such as humanitarian aid and medical evacuations to Maldives.
Looking ahead, the fifth meeting of the High-Level Core Group is scheduled to take place in Male, further underscoring the commitment of both nations to regular dialogue and collaboration.
This ongoing engagement signifies a concerted effort to address shared challenges and explore opportunities for mutual benefit.
With the imminent withdrawal of Bharatiya troops from the Maldives, a key election promise of Muizzu’s party, the diplomatic landscape in the region is poised for change.
However, the enduring partnership between Bharat and the Maldives, rooted in shared interests and values, is expected to continue evolving and strengthening in the years to come.
