On May 8, 1929, Girija Devi, hailed as the queen of Thumri, was born in Varanasi. Thumri, a cherished style of Indian classical music, is renowned for its rich blend of taste, color, and emotion. Belonging to the Banaras Gharana, Girija Devi received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1989, and Padma Vibhushan in 2016. Her musical journey commenced in 1949 with All India Radio, Allahabad, followed by her inaugural public concert in Bihar in 1951. Girija Devi’s mastery extended beyond thumri to classical music, earning her the title of the Thumri queen. Defying societal norms, she began her musical education under Guru Pandit Saryu Prasad Mishra at a tender age. In a groundbreaking event in 1952, Girija Devi showcased her thumri expertise before the President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries at the Constitution Club of Delhi, cementing her legacy as a stalwart of Indian classical music. .
