Recently in an address at Gargi College, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated Bharat’s support for a homeland for the Palestinians, underscoring the nations’s commitment to a balanced and principled stance on the Israel-Palestine issue. Jaishankar emphasized the complexity of the situation, involving not only Israel and Palestine but also various Arab countries, Gulf monarchies, and Iran.
Jaishankar highlighted Bharat’s response to recent escalations in the region, citing the importance of condemning terrorism while also advocating for the protection of civilian lives.
He noted Bharat’s diplomatic efforts, revealing that he personally contacted the foreign ministers of involved parties at the instruction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These communications aimed to express regional concerns and urge restraint in the face of escalating tensions.
Moreover, Jaishankar outlined Bharat’s practical contribution to mitigating conflicts in the Middle East. He mentioned the deployment of approximately 20 Bharatiya ships in the Red Sea to safeguard against attacks on shipping, which disrupt trade and increase costs.
