Recently in an interview with PTI, Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed grave concerns over the Canadian government’s tolerance of Sikh separatist elements within its borders. He emphasized that while Bharat respects freedom of speech, it should not extend to supporting separatism or threatening foreign diplomats.
Jaishankar questioned Canada’s vetting process for immigrants, particularly from Punjab, where individuals with dubious backgrounds, including Sikh Extremists supporters, seem to find refuge. He criticized Canada’s prioritization of political expediency over upholding the rule of law.
Bharat’s diaspora in Canada, predominantly Sikh, wields significant political influence, complicating the issue further. Tensions escalated following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s unfounded accusations implicating Bharatiya agents in a high-profile case, which Bharat vehemently denied.

The strained relations between the two nations stem from Canada’s perceived leniency towards pro-Sikh extremists elements operating with impunity. Jaishankar highlighted the presence of separatists and extremists in prominent positions within Canadian politics, exacerbating Bharat’s concerns.
Despite repeated engagements with Canadian authorities over the past decade, Bharat’s grievances remain unaddressed. The Canadian defense of freedom of speech does little to assuage Bharat’s concerns when it leads to activities detrimental to bilateral relations, including threats against Bharatiya diplomats.
Recent security threats against Bharatiya diplomats in Canada have further strained relations. Responding to Trudeau’s allegations, Bharat demanded a reduction in Canada’s diplomatic presence, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.
Canada’s subsequent withdrawal of diplomats did little to ease tensions, as Bharat remains steadfast in its stance against providing sanctuary to separatists. The recent murder case involving Bharatiya nationals entering Canada on student visas adds urgency to Bharat’s calls for action.
Bharat reiterated its expectation that Canada provides specific evidence and ensures the safety of Bharatiya diplomatic representatives. The ongoing security concerns underscore the need for decisive action by the Canadian government to address Bharat’s grievances and uphold bilateral relations.
