Bharat made significant strides in forest conservation and sustainable management, as highlighted during the 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF). The session, held at the UN Headquarters in New York from May 6th to 10th, 2024, saw Bharat emphasizing its accomplishments in increasing forest cover over the past fifteen years.
Ranking third globally in net gain in average annual forest area between 2010 and 2020, Bharat’s efforts were lauded on the international stage.
During the session, Bharat reiterated its commitment to biodiversity and wildlife conservation. The country boasts over a thousand wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, tiger reserves, biosphere reserves, and other habitats, showcasing its dedication to preserving natural ecosystems.
Celebrations marking 50 years of Project Tiger and 30 years of Project Elephant underscored India’s long-standing commitment to species conservation and habitat protection.
Moreover, Bharat took proactive steps towards international collaboration in conservation efforts. The creation of the International Big Cat Alliance aims to protect and conserve the seven big cat species worldwide through joint endeavors. This initiative shows Bharat’s recognition of the global nature of conservation challenges and the need for collective action.
Additionally, Bharat introduced the ‘Green Credit Programme’ to incentivize tree plantations and restore degraded forest lands. This program aligns with Bharat’s broader climate action initiatives and demonstrates its commitment to addressing environmental challenges through innovative approaches.
Bharat’s leadership in forest management was further demonstrated through hosting the country Led Initiative under UNFF in October 2023. Representatives from 40 nations and 20 international organizations convened in Dehradun to discuss forest fire management and certification.
Recommendations from this initiative were presented during UNFF 19, further enriching the dialogue on global forest management strategies.
At UNFF 19, Bharat also co-hosted a side event on ‘Principles and Strategies for Landscape Integrated Fire Management through Collaborative Governance.’ Partnering with agencies from Portugal, Korea, and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Bharat showcased its commitment to collaborative approaches in addressing forest management challenges.
The culmination of UNFF 19 saw a declaration to urgently address deforestation, forest degradation, and land degradation.
This declaration emphasizes the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests and the achievement of Global Forest Goals, signaling a collective commitment to safeguarding the world’s forests.
Led by Jitendra Kumar, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Bharatiya delegation played a pivotal role in advocating for sustainable forest management and conservation efforts on the global stage.
Bharat’s proactive participation underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship and its role as a leader in global conservation initiatives.
