Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, voiced his concerns on Tuesday regarding the current deployment of Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), describing it as “abnormal.”
Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Jaishankar highlighted the need to prioritize the security of the nation in the face of escalating tensions with China.
Jaishankar referenced historical diplomatic efforts, notably Rajiv Gandhi’s visit to China in 1988, as pivotal steps towards normalizing ties between the two countries after the 1962 conflict. He highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility along the border while addressing boundary differences through dialogue, a principle established during those talks.

However, the minister pointed out a significant shift in the situation since 2020, citing China’s breach of multiple agreements by deploying a large number of forces to the Bharatiya border during the COVID-19 lockdown. Responding, Bharat took measures to counter this deployment, resulting in heightened tensions and abnormal troop positioning, particularly in the Galwan Valley region.
Jaishankar underscored the gravity of the situation, urging Bharatiya citizens not to overlook the nation’s security concerns amidst these developments. He emphasized the economic implications of Bharat’s heavy reliance on Chinese imports, attributing it to past neglect of domestic manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
The strained relations between Bharat and China stem from the deadly clashes that occurred in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which resulted in casualties on both sides. Despite these tensions, Jaishankar expressed optimism about resolving remaining issues with Beijing, emphasizing the significance of restoring peace and tranquility along the border for normalizing bilateral ties.
Recently in an interview with PTI, Jaishankar reiterated Bharat’s hope for a peaceful resolution to outstanding issues, particularly regarding patrolling rights and abilities along the border. He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and cooperation between the two countries to achieve a lasting solution and pave the way for improved relations.
As Bharat navigates the complexities of its relationship with China, Jaishankar’s remarks expresses on the urgent need for diplomatic engagement and strategic measures to address security challenges and promote stability in the region.
