Following a cautionary note from the United States regarding potential sanctions over India’s recent agreement to operate the Chabahar Port in Iran, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reaffirmed the project’s regional significance during an interaction after the launch of the Bangla edition of his book ‘Why Bharat Matters’ in Kolkata on Tuesday.
Responding to queries about the US warning, Jaishankar underscored the need for effective communication to convey the broader benefits of the Chabahar Port deal, urging against a narrow perspective. He pointed out that the US itself had previously acknowledged the port’s wider relevance, expressing confidence in addressing concerns and advancing cooperation.
Earlier on the same day, the US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel, reiterated the continuation of sanctions on Iran and cautioned against engaging in business deals with the country, emphasizing the potential risks involved.
The Long-Term Bilateral Contract signed between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and the Port & Maritime Organisation (PMO) of Iran enables the operation of Shahid-Behesti port in the Chabahar Port Development Project for a decade. Jaishankar highlighted India’s longstanding involvement in the project and the significance of finally securing a long-term agreement, emphasizing its potential to benefit the entire region.
Acknowledging past challenges, Jaishankar explained that the signing of the long-term agreement was crucial for improving port operations and enhancing regional connectivity. The Chabahar Port serves as a vital transit hub for trade with landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian nations, with India playing a pivotal role in its development and operation.
India’s investment in the port’s infrastructure underscores its commitment to facilitating trade and strengthening ties with its regional partners, reflecting its strategic interests in the region.
