A judge from Poland, Tomasz Szmydt, has found himself in hot water after fleeing to neighboring Belarus. The Polish national prosecutors’ office has placed him on a wanted list, taking a significant step towards issuing an international arrest warrant against him on charges of espionage.
Spokesperson Przemyslaw Nowak announced on Thursday that the search for Szmydt has been initiated. Despite potential reluctance from Belarus to heed the international warrant, Szmydt’s freedom to travel internationally will be restricted.
Authorities in Poland are concerned about the potential harm Szmydt’s knowledge of classified information could pose to the nation’s interests, especially given its NATO and European Union membership. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has publicly labeled Szmydt as a traitor, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Szmydt gained notoriety in Poland for his involvement in a 2019 online smear campaign against fellow judges, allegedly sponsored by the Justice Ministry under the previous right-wing government.
Independent media sources in Belarus have reported sightings of Szmydt in an upscale district of Minsk, indicating possible accommodation in the country.
Belarusian state media disclosed on May 6 that Szmydt had arrived in the nation seeking protection, citing disagreement with the policies of Tusk’s pro-EU government. His defection has sent shockwaves through Poland, a nation with historical tensions and distrust towards Russia, which Belarus closely allies with and where tactical nuclear weapons are stationed.

This incident echoes a previous defection case in 2021 when Polish soldier Emil Czeczko sought asylum in Belarus. Shockingly, the following year, Belarusian authorities reported Czeczko’s death by hanging in his home in Minsk, without providing further details.
These events underscore the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in Eastern Europe and the consequences of individuals seeking refuge in neighboring nations amidst political turmoil.
