The Delhi Police are expected to visit Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence on Friday to investigate the alleged assault on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal. The investigation will involve taking statements from the police officers and staff present during the incident.
An FIR was lodged on Thursday at the Civil Lines police station regarding the alleged assault on Maliwal. She accused Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal’s personal secretary, of physically assaulting her. Members of the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Mahila Morcha staged a protest outside Kejriwal’s house, symbolically presenting bangles to the CM to express their dissatisfaction with his handling of the incident. A protester told PTI, “Arvind Kejriwal should be ashamed. He should resign from his post and apologise to the country. Swati Maliwal should get justice.”
Additional Commissioner of Police P S Kushwaha led a two-member team to record Maliwal’s statement at her residence around 1:50 PM on Thursday. Following this, the Delhi Police named Kumar in the FIR and sources indicated that he might be summoned to join the investigation. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also summoned Kumar to appear on May 17 at 11 AM.
In compliance with Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Maliwal’s statement will be officially recorded before a magistrate. This procedure ensures that a person’s statement or confession is documented during a police inquiry before the trial.
The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of May 13, when Maliwal visited Kejriwal’s residence to meet him. According to the FIR, Maliwal claimed she was assaulted by Kumar in Kejriwal’s drawing room while the CM was inside the house. She contacted the police control room at 9:34 PM to report the incident.
Maliwal’s complaint details that she was slapped, hit on the stomach, attacked, and kicked by Kumar. The investigation into these allegations is ongoing.
