On Friday, the United Kingdom announced sanctions against three companies and one individual involved in the illegal “arms-for-oil” trade between Russia and North Korea.
This move comes after the United States also imposed sanctions on two Russian individuals and three companies for facilitating arms transfers, including ballistic missiles, between the two nations for use in Ukraine.
The UK government stated that these sanctions are meant to highlight the illegal efforts of Russia and North Korea to evade United Nations sanctions on petroleum products. These products are crucial for supporting North Korea’s unlawful military programs.
The sanctions are part of a coordinated effort with international partners to hold both Moscow and Pyongyang accountable for their actions.
Foreign Secretary David Cameron emphasized that Britain would continue to pressure Russia and North Korea over their illicit arms trade. He criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for resorting to these illegal deals to support his war in Ukraine, violating UN sanctions that Russia had previously supported.

The sanctions target several entities involved in the arms-for-oil trade. Paekyangsan Shipping, which transfers petroleum products between North Korea and Russia, and Toplivo Bunkering Co (TBK), which allows vessels involved in these transfers to refuel at Russia’s Vostochny Port, are among those sanctioned.
In addition, the measures include asset freezes, transport sanctions, and travel bans against Russian cargo services provider Vostochnaya Stevedoring Co and TBK Director Aleksey Vorotnikov.
These sanctions come amid broader tensions between Russia and the West. During a visit to China, President Putin commented that U.S. sanctions policies are damaging global confidence in the dollar. The UK’s actions are part of ongoing international efforts to curb illicit activities and enforce UN sanctions aimed at maintaining global security and stability.
