On Monday, a tragic stabbing occurred at a primary school in Guixi city, located in China’s eastern Jiangxi province.
A 45-year-old woman, identified only by her surname Pan, went on a stabbing spree, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to ten others. This incident marks the second knife attack in China this month.
The attack took place in the morning, causing panic and chaos among the students and staff at the school. Local authorities quickly responded to the scene and managed to apprehend the suspect.
The state media reported that Pan has been taken into custody, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the motive behind the attack.
Among the ten injured, six people sustained minor injuries while attempting to evade the attack. All the injured individuals have been treated, and the local public security authorities have assured that they are receiving the necessary medical care.
This stabbing spree follows a similar incident that occurred earlier this month in Yunnan province. On May 7, a mass stabbing at a hospital resulted in the deaths of two people and left 21 others injured. These incidents highlight a disturbing trend of knife attacks in China, a country where private gun ownership is largely prohibited.
Previous year, China experienced several similar attacks. In August, a man with a history of mental illness attacked people with a knife in a residential area in Yunnan, killing two and injuring seven. In another shocking event in July, six people, including three children, were killed in a stabbing at a kindergarten in Guangdong province.
Officials often attribute these violent attacks to individuals who are disgruntled or suffering from mental health issues. The frequency of such incidents has raised concerns about public safety and the need for better mental health support and security measures in public places.
Zhenxiong County, located in Yunnan’s northeast and near the borders of Guizhou and Sichuan provinces, has also been the site of past violent incidents. Until 2020, this area was classified as poverty-stricken, which may contribute to the underlying social issues that lead to such attacks.
The recent events have sparked discussions about the underlying causes of these violent outbursts and the measures needed to prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation into the Guixi city attack continues, authorities are focused on understanding the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking incident and finding ways to enhance security and mental health resources to protect the public.
