The Election Commission of India reported on Tuesday that the 49 constituencies across six states and two Union Territories voting in Phase 5 of the Lok Sabha Election 2024 recorded an approximate voter turnout of 60.48%. This marks a slight decrease from the 61.82% turnout registered by these seats in the 2019 elections. However, with final figures still being updated, the gap is expected to narrow.
Polling on Monday covered constituencies in Uttar Pradesh (14), Maharashtra (13), West Bengal (7), Bihar (5), Odisha (5), Jharkhand (3), and one seat each in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Among these, West Bengal reported the highest voter turnout at 76%, followed by Ladakh at 70%, Odisha at 69%, Jharkhand at 63%, Uttar Pradesh at 58%, Bihar at 55%, and Maharashtra at 54%. Notably, the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir recorded its highest turnout since 1984, with 59% voter participation, up from 34.6% in 2019.
The first four phases of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw an overall turnout of 66.95%. While the initial three phases experienced a decrease in voter participation compared to 2019, the fourth phase recorded a slight increase with a 69.16% turnout.
Phase 1(April 19): 66.14%, down from 69.29% in 2019.
Phase 2 (April 26): 66.71%, down from 69.43% in 2019.
Phase 3 (May 7): 65.68%, down from 66.58% in 2019.
With the completion of voting in these 49 seats, elections for over three-fourths of the 543 Lok Sabha seats (428 seats) are now concluded. The remaining two phases are scheduled for May 25 and June 1. Counting for all phases will take place on June 4.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to secure a record third term with a target of winning 400 seats. The ruling coalition faces stiff competition from the opposition parties united under the Congress-led INDIA bloc.
