On May 21, 1991, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide attack during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Dhanu, an LTTE extremist, detonated explosives hidden on her waist, killing Rajiv Gandhi and 16 others, and injuring 45 people. The LTTE targeted Gandhi due to his decision to send Indian troops to combat their influence in Sri Lanka. In November 2022, six prisoners involved in the assassination were released from jail by the Supreme Court. Rajiv, initially a commercial pilot, entered politics after his brother Sanjay’s death in 1980 and became Prime Minister in 1984 at age 40. May 21 is commemorated as Anti-Terrorism Day in his honor.
