A Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore made an emergency landing in Bangkok on Tuesday after encountering severe turbulence, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was diverted to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where it landed at 3:45 PM local time on May 21, 2024.
The airline confirmed the incident via a statement on social media, saying, “Singapore Airlines flight #SQ321, operating from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on 20 May 2024, encountered severe turbulence en-route. T
he aircraft diverted to Bangkok and landed at 1545hrs local time on 21 May 2024.” The statement also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased passenger and acknowledged that there were injuries on board.
While Singapore Airlines did not specify the number of injured, multiple Thai media reports indicated that 30 passengers were affected. Upon landing, a medical team was on standby to assist the injured passengers and crew.
“Our priority is to provide all possible assistance to all passengers and crew on board the aircraft,” the airline emphasized. “We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance.”
The incident underscores the challenges airlines face with in-flight turbulence and the importance of swift emergency response protocols. Singapore Airlines is coordinating with Thai authorities to ensure that all affected passengers receive the necessary care and support.
