The funeral processions for Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and others killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday will be held today at Tehran University.
Bharat’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar will attend Raisi’s funeral procession on Wednesday, led by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The procession will then move to Maidan-e-Azadi (Azadi Square).
Mourners have already gathered in Tehran and Tabriz, where Raisi’s helicopter was headed when it crashed. President Raisi and FM Amirabdollahian were among nine people who died while returning from the Azerbaijan border after flagging off joint projects.
Countries including Bharat, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon declared periods of mourning. Bharat on Tuesday observed state mourning with flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for Raisi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other global leaders expressed their condolences. Religious leaders, including Pope Francis and Ayatollah Ali Sistani, also paid tribute.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited the Iranian embassy in Delhi, conveying Bharat’s deepest condolences and emphasizing solidarity with the people of Iran during this ‘difficult time’.
