Earlier in the day, Bharatiya Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar left for Tehran to attend the funeral. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a press release stating, “Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankar will pay a visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran on 22 May 2024 to attend the official ceremony to pay condolences on the tragic demise of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other Iranian officials in an unfortunate helicopter crash on 19 May 2024.”
Bharatiya President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent their heartfelt condolences to the Iranian government and its people. They expressed their sympathy for the families of the deceased and the nation as a whole during this difficult time.
In Iran, the government declared Wednesday a public holiday to hold a funeral in Tehran. The country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah will lead the prayers. Vice-President of Iran, Mohsen Mansouri, announced that President Raisi’s body would be buried in his birthplace, Mashhad, on Thursday.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited the Iranian embassy in New Delhi to convey Bharat’s “deepest condolences.” He spoke of the late President and Foreign Minister as “friends of India” who played a significant role in strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
In New Delhi, a condolence book was opened at the Iranian Embassy, allowing people to pay their respects to the late leaders. Bharat also observed a national day of mourning on May 21 in memory of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Abdollahian.
