China has issued a stern warning to anyone supporting Taiwan’s independence, declaring that the blood of those advocating for separation from the mainland would be spilled. The warning was accompanied by a display of military strength, as China encircled Taiwan with naval vessels and military aircraft in large-scale war games.
The move comes after Lai Ching-te was inaugurated as Taiwan’s new president, with China condemning his inaugural address as a declaration of independence. Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that Taiwan independence forces would face severe consequences for challenging China’s sovereignty.
Responding to what it perceives as separatist actions, China’s military initiated extensive “punishment drills” encircling Taiwan, involving various branches of its armed forces. These drills, named “Joint Sword-2024A,” commenced at 7.45 am on Thursday, as reported by state-run Xinhua news agency.

Taiwan has responded to the military maneuvers by deploying its own air, ground, and sea forces, reaffirming its commitment to defending its freedom and sovereignty. The island’s presidential spokeswoman condemned China’s actions as provocative and reiterated Taiwan’s determination to resist coercion.
The military exercises are being conducted in strategic locations around Taiwan, including the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south, and east of the island. China considers Taiwan to be a rebellious province that must be reunited with the mainland, even if it requires the use of force.
Li Xi, spokesperson for the PLA Eastern Theatre Command, responsible for the Taiwan Strait, stated that the drills serve as both punishment for the separatist actions of “Taiwan independence” forces and a warning against external interference and provocation.
The exercises are being carried out in various locations, including the Taiwan Strait and the surrounding islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin. These drills demonstrate China’s determination to maintain its territorial integrity and deter any attempts to undermine its sovereignty over Taiwan.
