The head of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Alexander Bortnikov, has made grave accusations against Ukrainian military intelligence. Bortnikov claimed that Ukrainian military intelligence was directly involved in a tragic attack on a concert hall near Moscow, resulting in the loss of over 140 lives.
As per the reports from the state news agency, Bortnikov stated, “The investigation is ongoing, but it is already safe to say that Ukrainian military intelligence is directly involved in this attack.” He went on to allege that NATO, the military alliance, has been aiding the transfer of “mercenaries and militants of international terrorist organizations from the Middle East, North Africa, and Afghanistan” to Ukraine to engage in conflict against Russian forces.
The Islamic State Khorasan, the Afghan branch of the Islamic State, initially claimed responsibility for the massacre at the concert hall back in March. US officials had also asserted intelligence confirming the involvement of this extremist group. However, Ukraine has consistently denied any connection to the attack.
Bortnikov further asserted that the Islamic State Khorasan played a role in coordinating the actions of the attackers, and shockingly, he claimed that Ukrainian military intelligence was also directly involved.
This isn’t the first time Russia has pointed fingers at Ukraine, alleging ties between the nation and perpetrators of violent acts. In a televised address, Russian President Vladimir Putin disclosed that 11 individuals, including the four gunmen responsible for the concert hall attack, had been detained. Putin stated, “They tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the state border.”
The situation remains tense as both Russia and Ukraine stand firm on their respective positions. With such serious accusations being exchanged, the international community watches closely, hoping for clarity and resolution amidst the chaos and tragedy.
