Delhi is gearing up for the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, scheduled for Saturday, May 25. All seven parliamentary seats in the national capital will be contested. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to replicate its success from the 2014 and 2019 elections when it won all seven seats.
The opposition INDIA bloc, comprising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, is also contesting the elections. AAP is running candidates in four constituencies, while Congress is contesting three. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently out on interim bail in the Delhi excise policy case.
Voting Schedule and Arrangements
Voting will be conducted across all seven constituencies from 7 am to 6 pm. The Chief Electoral Officer announced that there will be 13,641 polling stations in Delhi. Out of these, 2,891 polling stations have been identified as critical and will be directly monitored.
A total of 162 candidates are vying for seats in this crucial election, with the highest number of candidates in the North East Delhi constituency.
Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha constituencies include New Delhi, North East Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, North West Delhi, and Chandni Chowk.
North East Delhi
This constituency is a focal point in the election. BJP’s Manoj Tiwari, a two-time MP, is running against Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar. In the 2019 elections, Tiwari won with 53.90% of the votes, defeating Congress veteran Sheila Dikshit.
Chandni Chowk
In Chandni Chowk, BJP’s Praveen Khandelwal faces Congress veteran Jai Prakash Agarwal. This seat was previously held by BJP’s Harsh Vardhan since 2014. In the 2019 elections, Vardhan won by a margin of over 8% against Agarwal.
North West Delhi
In this constituency, Congress’s Udit Raj is competing against BJP’s Yogendra Chandolia. The seat, reserved for Scheduled Castes, was created in 2008 following delimitation and has the second-largest number of voters in Delhi, with 25,67,423. The area includes assembly segments like Narela, Badli, Rithala, Bawana, Mundka, and others.
New Delhi
BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj is running against AAP MLA Somnath Bharti in the New Delhi constituency. This seat is notable for its political significance and high-profile candidates.
East and West Delhi
In East Delhi, AAP’s Kuldeep Kumar faces BJP’s Harsh Malhotra. Meanwhile, in West Delhi, AAP’s Mahabal Mishra is contesting against BJP’s Kamaljeet Sehrawat.
South Delhi
Ramvir Singh Bidhuri of the BJP is contesting from South Delhi, with AAP fielding Sahiram Pahalwan as their candidate.
