Today, the voters will exercise their adult franchise at 58 seats across seven states and one Union Territory in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections to seal the fate of 889 candidates. In this crucial phase, Delhi and Haryana will go into polls, along with Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag-Rajouri constituencies. The voting process will commence at 7 am on Saturday and will conclude at 5 pm, with an extra hour as a buffer period for voters present in the voting line. The declaration of results is scheduled for June 4th.
Following high-spirited campaigning, people are set to elect Lok Sabha representatives in the following states. Delhi has 7 seats, West Bengal and Bihar each has 8 seats, one seat in J&K, four in Jharkhand, 6 in Odisha, and 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Multi-layer security arrangements have been put in place in J&K’s Anantnag-Rajouri constituency. Polling in the constituency was originally slated for May 7, however, the EC postponed it to May 25, citing adverse weather conditions.
As voting commenced this morning, PM Narendra Modi took to microblogging platform X to appeal to the public to cast their ballots in large numbers. Additionally, he especially urged the women voters and the youth voters to exercise their adult franchise in large numbers.
Notably, the Jat-dominated Hisar Lok Sabha seat, which hasn’t seen a single woman candidate in six decades, will witness a battle of the Chautala Bahus. Meanwhile, the BJP candidate from Odisha’s Puri Lok Sabha seat, Sambit Patra stated that the EVM is not working. Now, let’s have a look at some of the top candidates who are in the fray. Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, is a New Delhi Lok Sabha candidate and is contesting against AAP’s Somnath Bharti. In North East Delhi, the battle will be pitted against two key candidates: the sitting MP Manoj Tiwari and Congress’s Kanhaiya Kumar. Menaka Gandhi is contesting from the Sultanpur Lok Sabha seat, while Sambit Patra is contesting from the Puri seat in Odisha. BJP candidate and former Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar is contesting from Karnal constituency.
