At least seven newborns lost their lives in a devastating fire that erupted at a children’s hospital in East Delhi late Saturday night, officials reported.
The Delhi Fire Services received an emergency call at 11:32 p.m. regarding a blaze at a baby care center in the Vivek Vihar area. Sixteen fire tenders were promptly dispatched to the site. Despite rescue efforts, which saved 12 newborns from the building, seven infants succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Five other children remain hospitalized, with six currently admitted for ongoing care.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames completely, and further details are awaited from the investigation.
In a related incident, a fire broke out at a residential building in Delhi’s Shahdara area on Saturday night. Five fire brigade vehicles responded, rescuing 13 individuals who were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
Earlier the same day, another tragic fire in Gujarat’s Rajkot claimed the lives of 27 people, including nine children, at a gaming zone. “The bodies are completely charred and it is difficult to identify them,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinayak Patel.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their grief and condolences over the tragic incidents.
