Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asserted that religion-based reservation is unconstitutional and reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) opposition to any form of Muslim reservation.
“Reservation based on religion is unconstitutional. Baba Saheb Ambedkar strongly opposed it, but Congress and the parties of the INDI alliance are competing to provide Muslim reservations,” CM Adityanath stated.
In a sharp critique of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), CM Adityanath expressed gratitude to the Calcutta High Court for invalidating OBC certificates issued in West Bengal post-2010.
“In West Bengal, TMC has committed a complete robbery on the reservation rights of OBCs for the last 14 years by including 118 Muslim castes in the OBC category in 2010. We thank the Calcutta High Court for strongly reprimanding this unconstitutional act by the TMC,” he said.
Adityanath also pointed out similar issues in Bihar, criticizing Lalu Prasad Yadav for advocating Muslim reservations at the expense of OBC, SC, and ST reservations.
“Similarly, in Bihar, Lalu ji has already said that Muslims should get reservations. From where will they get this reservation? They want to give it to Muslims by taking away the reservation of OBC, SC, ST,” CM Adityanath remarked.
He emphasized the BJP’s stance against Muslim reservations to safeguard the quotas for SC, ST, and OBC communities.
“BJP opposes any kind of Muslim reservation to protect the reservation of SC, ST, and OBC. Furthermore, Muslim reservation is unconstitutional, and if there is an attempt to impose this type of evil practice, the integrity of the country will be affected,” CM Adityanath added.
The Calcutta High Court’s directive, issued on May 22, instructed the West Bengal Backward Classes Commission to prepare a new OBC list in accordance with the 1993 Act. Individuals included in the OBC list prior to 2010 will retain their status, while those added after 2010 will be annulled.
Approximately 500,000 OBC certificates are expected to be invalidated due to this decision. However, individuals who have secured jobs under the OBC quota or are in the process of doing so will not be affected.
In response to the Calcutta High Court’s decision, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared she would not accept the judgement, asserting, “OBC reservation continues and will always continue.”
