As the Lok Sabha election process nears its conclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed strong confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will emerge as the dominant force in West Bengal. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Modi described the election in the state as “one-sided,” asserting that Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders are “frustrated.”
Discussing the BJP’s prospects in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi highlighted his party’s significant gains in the previous assembly elections. “In Bengal elections, TMC is fighting for existence. In the last assembly elections, we went from three seats to 80. We received substantial support in the last Lok Sabha elections. This time, West Bengal will be the best-performing state for BJP,” Modi stated. He emphasized that public support is overwhelmingly in favor of the BJP.
The Prime Minister also addressed the political climate in West Bengal, noting that the TMC government is under pressure. “There are constant murders and attacks. BJP workers are being imprisoned before the elections. Despite these atrocities, the public is turning out in large numbers to vote,” Modi added.
Reflecting on the 2019 elections, Modi recalled how the BJP made significant inroads into the TMC stronghold, winning 18 seats and closely trailing the TMC, which secured 22 seats.
In the interview, Modi criticized the TMC regarding the Calcutta High Court’s decision to cancel all OBC certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010. He also condemned the Congress for allegedly granting religion-based reservations, which he claimed are unconstitutional.
Modi accused the TMC of abusing the judiciary following West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to accept the High Court’s verdict on OBC certificates. “They started giving reservations to minorities by making a law in Andhra Pradesh, which was rejected by the Supreme Court. In West Bengal, they made all Muslim castes OBCs overnight, robbing genuine OBCs of their rights. When the High Court’s judgment came, it exposed this fraud. Now, for vote bank politics, they are even abusing the judiciary, refusing to comply with the court,” Modi said.
With six phases of the Lok Sabha elections completed, the final phase is set for June 1, involving 57 constituencies across eight states and union territories. The election results will be announced on June 4.
