Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that Article 370 was not a priority for the people of Kashmir or the country but served the interests of “four-five families.” In an exclusive interview with ANI, Modi expressed satisfaction over the enthusiastic voter turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The removal of Article 370 has fostered a sense of unity and belongingness in Jammu and Kashmir, evident in the increased election participation and tourism boost,” Modi remarked. “Article 370 was the agenda of only a few families, not of the Kashmiri people or the nation. They claimed its removal would cause unrest, but it has instead strengthened unity and belongingness.”
The Modi government abrogated Article 370 in August 2019, shortly after beginning its second term. The Prime Minister highlighted the warm reception of G20 delegates in Kashmir as a sign of growing normalcy and integration.
This month, record voter turnouts were observed in the Lok Sabha polls across the union territory. Srinagar saw 38.49% polling, Baramulla 59.1%, and Anantnag-Rajouri 51.35%, marking the highest turnout since 1989. These were the first Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370.
“The decisions of the government are always made for the greater good,” Modi stated. He reflected on the initial measures, such as internet shutdowns, taken to ensure security and stability. “There was some temporary pain, but it was necessary. Today, children proudly say that the internet has not been shut down for the last five years, and they have all the facilities they need.”
Modi emphasized the significance of the high voter turnout in conveying a powerful message. “When people vote, it’s not just about winning; it signifies their acceptance of the Indian Constitution and their dedication to the spirit of India. This enthusiastic participation has broken 40-year voting records and sends a message to the world and those who doubted us.”
With six phases of the Lok Sabha elections completed, the final phase will take place on June 1. Votes will be counted on June 4.
