The day marks the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. Savarkar was born on May 28, 1883, in a Marathi Hindu Chitpavan Brahmin family to Damodar and Radhabai Savarkar in the village of Bhagur, near the city of Nashik, Maharashtra.
Savarkar started his activism when he was in high school. He also founded Mitra Mela in 1903 with his elder brother Ganesh Savarkar which later became Abhinav Bharat Society in 1906, and its main objectives were to overthrow British rule and revive “Hindu Pride.”
Savarkar was super active in activities for the development of the Hindu community and he advocated the abolition of the caste system in the country and requested the reconversion of those who converted to other religions.
Savarkar was a politician, activist and writer, he is said to have developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva while being detained in Ratnagiri in 1922. He became the leading figure in Hindu Mahasabha.
His followers added the prefix ‘Veer’ to his name. Meanwhile, PM Modi paid tribute to the great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary.

“Tribute to the great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar ji on his birth anniversary, who dedicated his life in the service of the motherland,” the prime minister said in a post on X.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also wrote in a post on X, ‘Veer Savarkar Ji, with his powerful thoughts, ignited the flame of patriotism in crores of youth and strengthened the feeling of one nation, one culture. He assimilated the mantra of nationalism and strongly opposed the policies of appeasement. Even the innumerable tortures of the British could not shake his resolve towards his motherland. Veer Savarkar ji, who devoted every moment of his life to the nation, started a public awareness campaign against evils like untouchability.
