On Tuesday the Supreme Court rejected the urgent hearing for the extension of the bail plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the now-scrapped excise policy case.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan, having heard the plea seeking a seven-day extension of interim bail to Kejriwal on medical grounds, noted that the case had already been deliberated upon, with the verdict currently reserved.

The apex court pulled Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, for not mentioning the plea seeking bail extension when Justice Dipankar Datta, judge of the main bench, was sitting last week.

Kejriwal, in the fresh plea filed on May 26, sought extension of his interim bail by seven days to undergo a host of medical tests, including a PET-CT scan in view of his sudden and unexplained weight loss, coupled with high ketone levels which are indicative of kidney, serious cardiac ailments and even cancer.

The Delhi CM said that he will surrender to jail authorities on June 9 instead of June 2, the scheduled date for his return to Tihar jail fixed by the Supreme Court.

In view of the Lok Sabha polls, the apex court had on May 10 granted 21-day interim bail to the chief minister, who was arrested in a money laundering case linked to the excise policy scam.

During the judgement, the court had mentioned that Kejriwal shall surrender on June 2, a day after the seventh and last phase of the Lok Sabha election.
