President Joe Biden’s campaign made a bold move on Tuesday by showing up outside former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York City. The trial, which is about alleged hush money payments made by Trump, has been ongoing for six weeks.
Biden’s team had not paid much attention to it until now. They decided to use the trial’s dramatic final moments to bring the focus back to the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.
To make their point, Biden’s campaign sent actor Robert De Niro and some of the first responders who were at the Capitol during the insurrection. They were not there to discuss the trial but to take advantage of the large media presence covering it.
Robert De Niro: On January 6, Trump rallied an angry mob to threaten democracy, leaving death and destruction in its wake. That's why I needed to be involved in the Biden-Harris ad. Michael Tyler, Biden’s campaign communication director, said, “We’re not here today because of what’s going on over there,” pointing towards the courthouse. “We’re here today because you all are here.”
Last week, Biden’s campaign released a new advertisement narrated by De Niro. In the ad, De Niro harshly criticized Trump’s presidency and warned about what could happen if Trump is re-elected. Speaking to reporters, De Niro said, “I love this city. I don’t want to destroy it. Donald Trump wants to destroy not only the city but the country and eventually, he could destroy the world.”
Trump’s allies were quick to respond. They planned their own press conference on the same day. Jason Miller, an adviser to Trump, argued that Biden’s event was proof that Trump’s prosecution was politically motivated. He posted on social media platform X, “Joe’s crookeds aren’t in PA, MI, WI, NV, AZ or GA – they’re outside the Biden Trial against President Trump. It’s always been about politics.”
By appearing outside Trump’s trial, Biden’s campaign aimed to shift the public’s attention back to the events of January 6 and the danger they believe Trump poses if he returns to power. This move highlights the intense political battle between Biden and Trump as the next presidential election approaches.
