The 6th meeting of the Bharat-Japan Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism took place in New Delhi today. Representatives from both nations came together to discuss the terrorist threats they face in their regions. This included issues like State-sponsored cross-border terrorism in South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, and the terror activities in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.
Both countries highlighted the need to strengthen their counter-terrorism efforts. The Bharatiya Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a press release emphasizing this point. The Bharatiya team was led by K.D. Dewal, Joint Secretary (CT), Ministry of External Affairs.
On the Japanese side, the delegation was headed by Hiroyuki Minami, Japan’s Ambassador in charge of International Cooperation for Countering Terrorism and International Organized Crime.

Counter-Terrorism Challenges
During the meeting, officials from Bharat and Japan assessed the various counter-terrorism challenges they face. One key area of discussion was the use of new and emerging technologies by terrorists.
They also talked about the misuse of the internet for terrorist purposes, radicalization, and terror financing. Both sides agreed on the importance of addressing these issues together.
The two nations decided to hold the 7th Meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism in Tokyo at a mutually convenient date. This shows their ongoing commitment to working together against terrorism.
As per the MEA press release, both sides discussed several other important issues. These included the fight against organized crime and narco-terror networks. They also talked about the importance of exchanging information, building capacities, conducting training programs and exercises, and cooperating at multilateral forums like the UN, FATF, and QUAD.
Additionally, in the counter-terrorism talks, the two nations recently held the 10th round of consultations on disarmament, non-proliferation, and export control in Tokyo on April 24. The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs), Ministry of External Affairs.
The Japanese delegation was led by Katsuro Kitagawa, Director General for Disarmament, Non-proliferation and Science Department, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During these consultations, Bharat and Japan exchanged views on various issues. They discussed developments in disarmament and non-proliferation in nuclear, chemical, and biological domains. They also talked about outer space security, non-proliferation issues, conventional weapons, and export control.
These meetings between Bharat and Japan demonstrate the strong and growing cooperation between the two nations on important global security issues. By working together, they aim to address and overcome the various threats posed by terrorism and other security challenges.
