In a significant development, the Pune Police have arrested the mother of a teenager involved in a fatal Porsche crash for allegedly aiding in tampering with his blood sample following the accident, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced on Saturday.
This marks the fourth arrest in the case, with the minor, his father, and grandfather already in custody. The arrest follows revelations by the Pune Police in a local court that the blood sample of the juvenile driver was purportedly swapped with that of a woman. Two doctors from Sassoon General Hospital have also been arrested for their alleged role in manipulating the blood samples.
“After the accident, the Yerawada police station sent the juvenile, his two friends who were in the car, and the family driver to Sassoon General Hospital for blood samples. The juvenile’s blood sample was swapped, while the results of the other three samples showed no traces of alcohol,” a police officer stated.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19 in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, where a Porsche, allegedly driven by the inebriated minor, collided with a two-wheeler, resulting in the deaths of two software engineers, Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta.
The 17-year-old has been placed in an observation home, while his father, real estate developer Vishal Agarwal, and grandfather, Surendra Agarwal, have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping the family’s driver and coercing him to take the blame.
The Pune Police have obtained permission to question the minor at the Yerawada Correction Centre, in the presence of his counsellors and family members, for a minimum of two hours. Initially, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) granted the minor bail with a condition to write a 300-word essay, which led to public outrage. Subsequently, the Pune Police appealed to the JJB, which remanded the teenager to an observation home for 14 days until June 5.
