The political arena heated up as Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a dig at the Congress party for its decision to abstain from participating in the Lok Sabha election 2024 exit poll debates scheduled for June 1. Shah accused the Congress of being “in denial mode” and accepting defeat even before the results are out.
Shah, while addressing the media, asserted that the Congress has been in denial ever since Rahul Gandhi assumed pivotal roles within the party. He highlighted the Congress’s initial campaign claims of securing a majority but alleged that the party is now realizing the grim reality of an impending defeat in the exit polls set to air post-election.
“The Congress ran the campaign through the polls that it is going to get a majority. But it has now realized the reality and knows that it faces a rout in the exit polls to be broadcast after the elections tomorrow,” Shah remarked, taking a swipe at the opposition.
Furthermore, Shah criticized Rahul Gandhi, attributing the Congress’s avoidance of the exit poll debates to its inability to explain a probable defeat. He urged Congress leaders to introspect rather than deny the situation, accusing the party of undermining institutions like the Supreme Court and the Election Commission when outcomes don’t align with its expectations.
Responding to Congress’s decision, BJP spokesperson Pawan Khera stated that the party would not engage in exit poll debates on television channels, emphasizing a focus on informing the public rather than engaging in political theatrics for ratings.
The Election Commission of India has issued guidelines permitting the release of exit poll data and results by television news channels and outlets after 6:30 pm on June 1, following the conclusion of Lok Sabha election voting.
