The Union government has approved the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati in Assam. The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday.
IIM Ahmedabad has been chosen to lead the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new institute. This will be done in close collaboration with the Assam government, as indicated in a letter from the Ministry of Education.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support in this initiative. He shared that over the past 18 months, the Assam government has been actively presenting their case to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the Ministry of Education. Their efforts have now paid off with the approval for the new IIM.
Assam has offered premier land and logistical support for the establishment of the new IIM. IIM Ahmedabad will play a key role in mentoring the upcoming institute in Guwahati. Chief Minister Sarma believes that this new IIM will be a significant development for Assam.
He stated that it will transform the state into an education hub in Eastern India and also help fulfill the economic aspirations of the region.
The Chief Minister highlighted the potential benefits of the new IIM. He believes that it will attract students and faculty from across the country, enhancing the quality of education in Assam. Additionally, it will provide new opportunities for local students to pursue world-class management education without having to travel far.
