Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced they raised $141 million in May. This large sum includes millions of dollars contributed after Trump was found guilty in his criminal hush money trial.
Trump’s campaign doesn’t need to report its fundraising details to the Federal Election Commission until later this month. However, they chose to share these numbers early to show that the guilty verdict has actually boosted support from his followers. They believe this wave of contributions shows strong backing for Trump’s efforts to return to the White House.
President Joe Biden’s campaign has not yet shared their fundraising totals for May. In April, Trump and the Republican Party raised $76 million, which was more than the $51 million raised by Biden and the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
It’s not clear how much Trump and the GOP spent in May. However, the large sum raised could help them close the fundraising gap with Biden that has existed throughout the race.
Trump’s campaign said in a press release on Monday that they received over two million donations in May, with an average donation of $70.27. Over a third of the money—37.6%—came from online contributions made in the 24 hours after the guilty verdict was announced. The campaign also mentioned that about a quarter of the donors were new supporters.
Trump Campaign senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said they were touched by the support for Trump. They stated, “The American people saw right through Crooked Joe Biden’s rigged trial, and sent Biden and Democrats a powerful message – the REAL verdict will come on November 5th.”

Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa responded by saying they would wait to see the official fundraising numbers but noted, “Trump’s billionaire friends are propping up the campaign of a white-collar crook because they know the deal – they cut him checks and he cuts their taxes while working people and the middle class pay the tab.”
Last week, Trump’s campaign announced they had raised more than $50 million online within 24 hours after the Manhattan jury announced its verdict. This makes Trump the first former president—and first major party presumptive nominee—to be convicted of a crime. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
