Modi’s Third Term Victory
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured his third term in office with the support of other coalition parties, primarily Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) and Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP. The counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections took place on Tuesday.
As per the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats, which is lower than its 2019 tally of 303. In contrast, the Congress party showed significant growth, winning 99 seats. The INDIA bloc, an opposition coalition, crossed the 230-seat mark, presenting strong competition and defying predictions.
Strengthening India-Taiwan Ties
The economic partnership between Bharat and Taiwan has seen substantial growth in recent years. Taiwan views Bharat as a key partner under its ‘New Southbound Policy.’ Both countries have also signed a migration agreement, allowing Bharatiya workers to be employed in Taiwanese industries. President Lai highlighted the importance of this partnership and the potential for further collaboration in various sectors.
Lai Ching-te, the newly elected president of Taiwan from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was sworn in on May 20. He became the fifth popularly elected president of Taiwan.
The DPP has now become the first ruling party to govern Taiwan for three consecutive four-year terms. Alongside President Lai, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim also took office. Taiwan has held direct presidential elections since 1996.
Lai’s Message to China
In his inaugural speech, President Lai Ching-te issued a stern warning to China, urging Beijing to cease its intimidation tactics towards Taiwan. China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and has intensified military drills since Lai took office.
These actions have heightened tensions in the region. President Lai’s message underscores Taiwan’s determination to defend its sovereignty while seeking peaceful relations with its neighbors.
The congratulatory message from President Lai to Prime Minister Modi marks a positive step in the growing relationship between Taiwan and Bharat. As both nations look to enhance their collaboration, this partnership is poised to contribute to regional peace and prosperity.
With new leadership in Taiwan and continued growth in Bharat, the future holds promising opportunities for both countries.
