Devendra Fadnavis, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a senior BJP leader is planning to ask the BJP leadership to relieve him of his deputy CM responsibilities. This decision comes after the BJP’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where their seats in Maharashtra dropped from 23 in 2019 to just nine this year.
Fadnavis has been a prominent figure in Maharashtra’s BJP leadership. He took full responsibility for the party’s poor showing in the elections. “I want to work at the organisational level to improve the performance of the party in the ensuing Assembly elections. I want to devote my full time to strengthening the organisation. I am going to request my central leadership to free me from the responsibility of the post in the state government,” Fadnavis told a press conference after a review meeting on the Lok Sabha results.

The meeting, which took place the day after the election results were announced, was attended by top BJP leaders, including state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
The main agenda of the meeting was to analyze the party’s performance and discuss future strategies. Even though the BJP and its allies won 17 out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, this was seen as a significant decline compared to the 2019 elections.
In the previous Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had secured 23 seats in Maharashtra. This time, however, their performance was overshadowed by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which includes Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).

The MVA won a total of 30 seats, marking a substantial gain for the alliance. Congress had a increase, winning 13 seats compared to just one in 2019. Shiv Sena (UBT) secured nine seats, while NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won eight.
Fadnavis was sworn in as the deputy chief minister in the Eknath Shinde-led government on June 30, 2022. His tenure has been marked by efforts to consolidate the party’s position in the state.
However, the recent election results have prompted him to reconsider his role. By focusing on strengthening the party at the organizational level, Fadnavis hopes to improve BJP’s performance in the upcoming Assembly elections.
This move by Fadnavis reflects the internal dynamics of the BJP as they navigate the challenges posed by a resurgent opposition. The party’s leadership will now have to decide on his request and plan their strategy for the future.
