In a heart-wrenching incident, four Bharatiya students from Jalgaon district in Maharashtra drowned in the Volkhov River in Russia. The tragic event occurred on Thursday while they were studying at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod. A fifth student, who narrowly escaped the incident, is currently receiving medical attention.
External Affairs Ministry’s Statement
On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs of Bharat confirmed the news, stating that their consulate in St. Petersburg is actively engaged with the university and local authorities to provide all possible assistance. The ministry expressed its condolences to the bereaved families and assured that efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining bodies and repatriate them to Bharat.
Local emergency services have so far recovered two of the deceased students’ bodies from the Volkhov River. The search continues for the other two missing students. The Bharatiya consulate in St. Petersburg is working closely with local authorities to expedite the repatriation process of the mortal remains.
The Bharatiya embassy in Moscow has assured that they are working diligently to send the bodies back to the students’ families as soon as possible. They have also confirmed that the student who survived is receiving the best possible medical and psychological care.
Jalgaon District Collector, Ayush Prasad, mentioned that the Ministry of External Affairs has been in constant contact with the Bharatiya embassy in Russia and the consular general in St. Petersburg. They have provided significant support to the affected families and are coordinating with judicial, police, and disaster management authorities to manage the situation.
University’s Response and Assurance
The university, Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University, where these students were pursuing medical education, has also expressed their condolences and assured full cooperation with the authorities.
The Bharatiya Consulate in St. Petersburg reiterated that they are working to send the mortal remains to the families as per international protocols and providing necessary medical care to the surviving student.
