Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning to the West, stating that Moscow could arm nations to threaten Western assets amid growing tensions between Russia and the West, especially concerning the situation in Ukraine. While reacting to Germany and France providing military assistance to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, Putin claimed that Russia’s nuclear strength surpasses the bombings of World War II. He was addressing the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
In response to provocative actions by Western nations, including the arming of Ukraine with long-range missiles, the Russian President criticized the West for aiding Ukraine’s military weaponry and issued a dire warning that such measures could result in “very serious problems.” The Russian president refuted Western assumptions about Russia’s position on nuclear weapons and warned of the threat of nuclear escalation in addition to conventional combat. Furthermore, he asserted that Moscow would consider using all available means to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Putin slammed Germany for enabling Ukraine to use German-made weapons to attack targets within Russia, stating that such acts would “completely ruin Russian-German relations.” He also warned the US for allowing Ukraine to deploy American-supplied weapons near the Kharkiv region, warning of further destabilization. Putin made unverifiable assertions that 1,300 Russian troops are held captive in Ukraine and that over 6,400 Ukrainians are arrested in Russia.
Despite his categorical denials of any plans to attack NATO territories, Putin’s words underscore the growing distance between Russia and the West and the tensions that are becoming unbearable. According to reports, Ukrainian forces are launching strikes within Russian territory using weapons provided by the US, portraying a horrifying image of escalating conflicts. Interestingly, the combat also involves drones and missiles from North Korea, a Russian ally, that were manufactured in Iran, another key ally of Moscow.
Putin believes that since the US is arming Russia’s enemy, Ukraine, he too has the right to arm regions where there may be attacks on important infrastructure by Western countries. While not specifying which countries could be recipients of such arms, the implications are deeply troubling amidst two ongoing wars in the world.
