Envious of the growing harmony between India and Taiwan, China on Thursday overreacting over an exchange of messages between PM Narendra Modi and Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, lodged a protest pointing at India. In response to a congratulatory message, PM Modi expressed his keenness to bolster the New Delhi – Taipei partnership, however, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted to it saying it “opposed all interactions” between Taiwanese authorities and countries having “diplomatic ties with Beijing”.
Post the big verdict on Wednesday, wishes poured in for PM Modi from over 100 world leaders, including Taiwanese President, Lai Ching-te. On Thursday, President Lai Ching-te congratulated the BJP stalwart for securing a rare third term in the Lok Sabha elections after the BJP-led NDA declared that it would form a coalition Central government. However, it did not go down well with China.
The “diplomatic ties”, that China boasts of, hold no credibility owing to China’s territorial expansionist bid. In its provocative move, China has time and again, made baseless claims over Indian territories – Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Although India outrightly rejects this false narrative. EAM S. Jaishankar has clarified to China that normalcy in diplomatic and bilateral ties with China will only be achieved based on the traditional deployment of troops at LAC, and would also be the prerequisite for the relationship with Beijing in the future.
Meanwhile, regarding its ties with Taiwan, India has affirmed on several occasions that it would side with and protect the island nation’s peace and tranquility against any Chinese aggression. In recent times, India has straightforwardly confronted China over its military aggression in the Taiwan Strait, while also extending military support to Taipei.
Additionally, Beijing’s current envious statement adds to the ongoing conflict between China and Taiwan, with the former protesting the election of Taipei’s new President, Lai Ching-te. In order to “punish” Taiwan, China even carried out military drills encircling Taiwanese borders to assess its ability to seize control over the island nation.
Meanwhile, reacting to China’s overreaction to the exchange of greetings between PM Modi and the Taiwanese President, the US State Department said such congratulatory messages between the two “foreign leaders are a part of the diplomatic business”.
