Bharat is showing a keen interest in managing operations at Bangladesh’s Mongla Port and building a new terminal there. This move is part of Bharat’s strategy to counter China’s growing influence in the region, as China also aims to control this important port.
Bharat’s interest in Mongla Port fits into its broader plan to strengthen its presence in the Indian Ocean. Currently, Bharat already operates two other significant ports: Chabahar Port in Iran and Sittwe Port in Myanmar.
If Bharat takes over operations at Mongla Port, it will enhance its strategic position on both the western and eastern fronts of the Indian Ocean. This move would reinforce Bharat role as a major player in the region’s security.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to discuss this matter with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during their upcoming meetings. These discussions are crucial for moving forward with Bharat’s plans for the Mongla Port.
Bharat Ports Global Limited (IPGL) has already visited Mongla Port to understand its operations better. They are currently in negotiations to finalize the deal. If successful, this would make Mongla the third international port operation managed by Bharat, after Chabahar and Sittwe.
Evaluation and Expansion
The Mongla Port Authority will carefully evaluate Bharat’s proposal, looking at its potential profitability. The port currently handles container and bulk carrier vessels. There are also plans to construct two more jetties to manage the expected increase in cargo volume from transshipment activities.
Bharat’s interest in Mongla Port is a strategic move to secure its influence over key maritime locations in the Indian Ocean. By managing Mongla, Bharat aims to strengthen its position against China’s expanding presence in the region.
The upcoming meetings between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be crucial in determining the future of this proposal.
