This weekend, Switzerland will host a major peace summit to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. Despite Russia’s refusal to attend, nearly 90 countries and organizations have confirmed their participation. Switzerland’s president, Viola Amherd, announced this on Monday.
The summit aims to find a path toward peace almost 28 months after Russia invaded Ukraine. Amherd emphasized that this meeting was not about propaganda but about providing humanitarian aid and starting a dialogue. Many of the participants will be country leaders, with some represented by heads of state or government. Organizations like the United Nations will also be present.
Prominent leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are expected to attend. The summit will be held at the Buergenstock resort, which overlooks Lake Lucerne. Out of the 160 invitations sent, fewer than 100 have confirmed their attendance so far, which Swiss officials do not see as a disappointment.
The final list of attendees is expected by Friday. Notably, Turkey, South Africa, and Brazil have not yet confirmed their participation. Bharat will attend, though it is unclear at what level. Brazil and China have stated they will not participate unless Russia is involved, with China being a strong supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis mentioned that while Russia’s participation is crucial, the focus is on when they will join the peace process, not if. Switzerland is in regular contact with Moscow regarding the conference. Cassis also highlighted the need to balance Ukraine’s involvement, as they might not attend if Russia were present.

The conference aims to establish a “lasting peace” in Ukraine, reach a common understanding, and develop a roadmap for getting both sides to the negotiating table. Key topics will include nuclear security, humanitarian aid, and food security.
To ensure the summit’s safety, up to 4,000 military personnel will be deployed. They will handle air transportation, surveillance, and set up security fencing and steel wire around the event. There has been an increase in cyberattacks leading up to the summit, although details were not provided.
The Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland represents a significant effort to address the ongoing conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution. Despite the absence of Russia and the uncertain participation of some nations, the event aims to lay the groundwork for future peace talks and provide much-needed humanitarian support.
