On Tuesday, Saulos Chilima, Malawi Vice President was killed in a plane crash, said Malawi President’s office in a press release.
A military plane carrying Malawi’s vice president and nine others went missing Monday and a search was underway for the same. However, Chilima along with the 9 others onboard have been confirmed dead.
The plane carrying 51-year-old Vice President Saulos Chilima left the capital, Lilongwe, but failed to make its scheduled landing at Muzzu International Airport about 370 kilometers (230 miles) to the north around 45 minutes later. The viation authorities lost contact with the plane and it went off radar.
Born on February 12, 1973, Chilima is a business executive-turned-politician who holds a PhD in Knowledge Management from the University of Bolton, a Master’s degree in Economics as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Computer Science and Economics from the University of Malawi. He was sworn in for his second term as Vice President in 2020.
Last month, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials died in a helicopter crash. The chopper crashed in Jolfa in the mountainous northwestern region of the country on May 19.
