Following the Canadian PM’s absurd congratulatory post, PM Narendra Modi delicately addressed the underlying tensions and concerns with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by communicating India’s clear stance. While the PM was kind in his reply, his response had a serious message that emphasized India’s expectations of ‘mutual’ respect and understanding for the bilateral relations to run smoothly. After the Lok Sabha election result, Trudeau’s congratulations to Modi took a contentious turn, eliciting a sharp reply from PM Modi.
While India has time and again, voiced its fair concerns over the Canadian government’s sheltering of separatist elements and its backing to the Sikh separatist movements in Canada, EAM S Jaishankar criticized the administration last month in strong words, thrashing it for consistently issuing visas to individuals linked to organized crime for what he termed as “political expediency.”
Dr Jaishankar strongly denounced Canada’s perceived support for “extremist ideologies, separatism, and proponents of violence” under the pretext of upholding free speech. This condemnation highlights the mounting tensions between the two nations regarding national security issues.
Additionally, PM Modi’s firm response to Trudeau’s cryptic message expressed a substantial stance on the concerns, quietly emphasizing India’s sovereignty and adherence to its ideals.
For the unversed, the relations between the two countries turned sour after Canadian accusations that Indian officials were involved in the murder of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India fiercely denied these allegations, calling them unfounded, and requested proof, which Canada has yet been unable to supply.
